Before the test
There are different types of Ultrasound tests.
Abdominal

Fasting for 12 hours prior to the test and fat free dinner (no dairy products, meat, eggs or fried foods) the day before.

Examination time is approx 30 min.
Renal Only

Drink 2 full glasses (16 oz.) of water 2 hours prior to examination, Do not void until after the examination.
Pelvic / Obstetrical / Bladder Examination

A full bladder is essential for these examinations. Do not empty your bladder for two hours before your appointment. Drink 32 oz. (4 cups) of water. Please complete drinking your water at least 1 hour before your appointment time.
Abdominal and Pelvic (Combination Exam)

Fat free diet (no dairy products, meat, eggs or fried foods) the day before and fasting for 12 hours. Do not empty your bladder for two hours before your appointment. Drink 32 oz. (4 cups) of water. Please complete drinking your water at least 1 hour before your appointment time.
Breast, Thyroid, Testes & Extremities

No preparation is required.
During the test
An Ultrasound may require you to remove some or all of your clothing and put on a gown. The technician will place lubricating gel onto the area being examined. During the test, the technician will use a device called a transducer and make contact with your skin, sweeping back and forth over the area being examined.
After the test
Once the test is completed, you are able to return to your normal activities.
Your requisition form
To avoid delays on the day of your test, ensure that you bring your health card and your requisition. Also, confirm that your your doctor included the following on your requisition form:
